Foot and leg ulcers are open sores caused when the circulation to the affected area is not able to keep the tissue viable and healthy. They usually occur in a weight bearing area or another area which is prone to pressure.  The ulcer may present as a deep wound with swelling, redness, and inflammation around the crater. A smelly discharge might seep from the wound. There may be thickened skin or swelling around the wound. Left untreated, ulcers can lead to serious problems requiring surgery and amputations.

Ulcers can be painful, but some patients with nerve or sensory damage, are unable to feel them developing.

If you have sensory damage on your feet, please check them daily for potential wounds. When sensation is affected, it fails to warn the body of the risk, and these are the trickiest feet to manage. It is essential to get these treated quickly. If a foot ulcer is not managed and treated, it can eventually lead to amputation. This is real concern for those people with Diabetes and other vascular and nerve problems.

Ulcers can present on the sole of the foot, and bony pressure areas such as the tops of toes. Always seek advice from your medical practitioner or podiatrist if you become aware of early signs of skin break down.

Ulcers are more likely to occur when blood circulation or nerves in your feet or legs are damaged. Ulcers can easily develop in aged feet with toe deformities and shape change. Poor fitting shoes, injuries or skin tears and loss of sensation in your foot all contribute to ulcer risk.
