A bunion is also known as Hallux Valgus. It is a deformity of the joint connecting the big toe to the forefoot. While a bunion deformity can simply be an unsightly change in shape to the main joint of the big toe, it is really an entire forefoot, progressive, shape change.

The affected toe joint may also develop osteoarthritis, reduced range of motion,  pain when there is pressure on the joint, pain on movement of the joint.

Today’s understanding of the mechanisms behind their development, what makes them painful and how they can affect the rest of the foot and lower limb means anyone with a family history or sign of this condition should be assessed and seen. While bunions are not inherited, foot structure can be inherited, and certain foot structures are more prone to developing them.

Podiatrists are uniquely placed to advise on this condition and strategies that can minimise bunion formation and progression, manage pain and function. The onset of bunions is gradual. The earlier we can help assist in load management strategies that combat the progression of this disorder the better.

At the ball of the foot, there is a complex unit and hinge function, and with a high load of steps it is affected by our own individual build, along with activity, shoe type, and occupation. As such, no two people are ever quite the same, but the principles of management do remain similar. We will thoroughly assess and advise in each case.

Orthotics are used in bunion management  to control the foot function which in turn slows the progression of the bunion. Orthotics can also be utilised to help manage pain by offloading the big toe joint. Orthotics will not fix a bunion, but they can assist with slowing the progression and reducing pressure on the affected joint. A prescription orthotic is best used in this instance so that it is made on the actual shape of your foot and prescribed with specific modifications for your foot.

A Woman Who Has Trained Hard To Run Faster Safely

Footwear can play an important role in developing and managing symptoms of bunions and the podiatrists at Melbourne Foot Clinic can advise on this. The best footwear for bunions is orthotic friendly, have a firm sole which will minimise movement at the big toe, have plenty of toe room so the toes are not squashed together. High heels are best avoided due to the bend at the big toe joint. If you like extra height in your shoe, a platform or wedge shoe is more advisable than a high heel shoe. As the bunion progresses, you may need a larger size shoe.

While correction of the bunion requires surgery, reducing or  controlling  pain associated with bunions is very much achievable through the use of appropriate footwear with the right feature and the utilisation of an orthotic to redistribute load. Melbourne Foot Clinic has an in-house workshop which allows us to provide basic in-house shoe modifications such as padding and stretching around the bunion to increase foot comfort and reduce direct pressure on the bunion.

Bunion surgery is complex and will nearly always require post-operative management of some form. A six to eight week recovery on crutches is to be expected. Hence limiting the chance of surgery is always preferable, and should surgery be required your podiatrist can organise a referral for you.
