A Podiatrist at Melbourne Foot Clinic Named Matthew Dilnot

What is a Prescription Orthotic?

This is an orthotic designed and made specifically for you to improve the way your foot functions.

A prescription orthotic is a medical device that supports and aligns the foot to improve foot function during standing, walking and other weight bearing activities. Orthotics are designed by your Podiatrist to apply and distribute the load in your foot to correct the way your foot works and to spread the load more evenly through the foot.

  • The Podiatrist will complete a biomechanical assessment of your walking, range of motion  and foot function.
  • This is followed by a 3D scan of your feet.
  • Next  step is to write a prescription for an orthotic that is totally designed for you.
  • An external laboratory makes your orthotics using 3D printing technology, and we are able to issue them to you at your next appointment in approximately two weeks.

Melbourne Foot Clinic has a dedicated orthotic area within our clinic where we use our years of experience and clinical skills to make  can make specific modifications and additions.

The advantages of a prescription orthotic is that it is purpose-made for your foot and lifestyle. The shell of the orthotic is strong and provides maximum control. We have many patients who continue to use the same prescription orthotic for years, returning yearly for a check-up, minor modifications, or an orthotic recover.

Changes in foot and lower limb function, injury or a change in activity may need a new orthotic prescription.

What is an over the counter orthotic?

An “over the counter” orthotic prescribed by a Podiatrist is also a medical device.

Melbourne Foot Clinic stocks a range of these that are prescribed correction for simple foot problems, or foot comfort. This type of orthotic suit a range of foot conditions and our podiatrists use our in-house workshop to for additions and modifications. Each range has different benefits, and your podiatrist will recommend the right ones for you.

Generally, they are less expensive than a prescription orthotic, but they do require replacement from time to time, just like shoes. These can be purchased over the counter at  the clinic, at your next appointment.
