Podiatrists are experts in foot, ankle, and lower limb health. They are trained to prevent, diagnose, and treat a wide range of conditions that cause foot and lower limb pain.

A basic list of very common foot and lower limb complaints and disorders our podiatrists assess and treat regularly would include:

  • Injury such as sprains, strains, and fractures. Melbourne Foot Clinic has a great relationship with a local imaging service and can refer for x-rays, ultrasounds, and scans to diagnose and manage these injuries.
  • Poor Foot Biomechanics – the structure of the foot can lead to pain to the foot, ankle, knee, and hip. Patients often visit for conditions they might refer to as “flat feet” (pes planus), “rolling in” (pronation) “rolling out” (supination)” . These conditions are generally managed with a custom orthotic  to improve foot function.
  • Arthritis – degenerative and/or inflammatory changes to joints. Different types of arthritis can affect the feet and cause joint pain, swelling and stiffness. Arthritis in the feet can make standing and walking painful. Your podiatrist can assist with advice about footwear and shoe modifications, nail and skin care, and functional orthotics.
  • Tendonitis – inflammation of the tendons, such as “Achilles tendonitis”. The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the body. This strong tendon connects the calf muscle to the heel bone. It can become irritated and inflamed, often with overuse rather than a specific injury. Your podiatrist may order imaging tests to determine severity and cause. Treatment can include an activity plan, prescribed rehabilitation exercises, footwear advice and modification and customised functional orthotics.  Shockwave can also be utilised in combination with the conservative measures list above.

  • Shin Splints – Also known as “medial tibial stress syndrome” is pain felt along the shin bone or lower leg muscles below the knee due to inflammation of tissue in that area. The alternate diagnosis is a “stress fracture” Your podiatrist will test to determine the diagnosis to plan a treatment regime with you. This may include avoiding activity causing the pain, stretching, and massaging calf muscles, footwear advice and orthotic therapy.
  • Peripheral Vascular Disease – where blood flow is restricted to the lower limb. Peripheral Neuropathy – nerve change or damage of the foot and lower limbs. Both these conditions stem from complications in other medical conditions. In our clinic,  the majority of patients with these conditions also have Diabetes. Podiatry treatment in these cases involve regular general foot care and scheduled Diabetes Assessments with a podiatrist. Your podiatrist will provide management advice on how to protect and care for your feet to avoid developing ulcers requiring wound management.
  • Severs Disease  (also known as calcaneal apophysitis) is common heel pain in young and physically active children. It involves inflammation at the back of the heel growth plate during growing periods. A similar condition exists in the knee with which called Osgood-Schlatter disease where there is inflammation present at the patella tendon just below the knee. Your podiatrist will assess the history of the pain, consider load management involving heel raisers, heel cushions, foot orthotics, footwear. They will also develop an age-appropriate strategy to minimise aggravating the condition during the rehabilitation period.

No single treatment works for everyone or for every condition. This makes it important to see an experienced podiatrist for diagnosis and management of your foot pain.
