Most of us pronate to some degree when we walk. It is part of the normal walking cycle and helps shock absorption. However, excessive pronation can affect the normal walking pattern causing stress on soft tissue structures and inefficient lower limb function. This can lead to heel pain, shin pain and ankle problems and leave the feet feeling tired and sore.
A normal walking pattern, in very simple terms, does the following movement. The outside of the heel strikes the ground first, then the foot rolls (pronates) through to the big toe for lift off. When there is excessive or abnormal pronation, a long list of potential problems is possible in feet and lower limbs.
Foot, heel, and ankle conditions; Bunions, corns, callouses, hammer toes. heel pain, plantar fasciitis, Sever’s disease, heel spurs ankle pain.
Shin and calf injury: Shin splints, calf pain, tendinopathy
Knee pain: Patella femoral pain, Osgood Schlatter’s Disease
Hips and thighs: Iliotibial band syndrome, bursitis
Your podiatrist will take a biomechanical approach to the diagnosis of the cause of this abnormality. The cause of the pronation or flat foot problem determines which treatment options work best.
Approximately 10% of the population has some degree of hypermobility which can result in abnormal pronation. If you, or you child demonstrates hypermobility and/or has an abnormal foot movement while walking and standing it is smart to be assessed by the podiatrist.
Hereditary bony or soft tissue abnormalities can also affect foot function and are common in family groups.
Poor muscle strength can also be a factor and we may prescribe an exercise program to improve muscle strength.
We can optimise flat feet function with supportive and corrective orthotics. Your podiatrist will complete a biomechanical assessment to determine the cause and effect of your foot condition.
Our orthotics are made by taking a precise 3D scan of your feet. Your podiatrist will design and prescribe an orthotic specific to your foot. Both the 3D scan and the prescription are sent to a laboratory for manufacture. The orthotics are finely modified and fitted to your shoes in the clinic.
Orthotics and made from a vast array of materials and should be comfortable and easy to fit with current shoes. It is rare that someone will have to change footwear size, and equally rare that they require to wear the orthotics full time.
