Corns and Calluses are common skin conditions that are often found on the balls of the feet, tops of the toes, base of the heels and on the side of nails. The good news is that they can be easily treated, and appropriate care to assist in prevention will be implemented.

When pressure is placed on the foot during walking, standing, and wearing shoes for extended periods, the body develops skin thickening in the surface of the skin. This is callus. It is a bodily defence system to protect the underlying tissues. If the pressure is not relieved, it can become painful and sore.

A small hard corn develops when the pressure is concentrated in a small area and can cause inflammation and pain. Sometimes a small soft rubbery corn can occur between the toes from friction.

Sometimes, corns and calluses may be early warning signs of underlying problems and more complex foot disorders to it is wise to see a professional. This is essential where the patient suffers from a condition such as diabetes, or where there is poor blood flow and/or a loss of sensation.

Podiatry treatment will include gently removing the hard skin of the callus or corn. If this is a recurring problem, your podiatrist will consider ways to reduce the pressure on your skin. This may include:
