\u2018Flat feet\u2019 is a common concern for many people and one of the main reasons people make an appointment to see us. The podiatry term for flat feet is \u201cpes planus\u201d and it is often associated with excessive pronation. Pronation is a normal foot movement when we walk.<\/p>\n

Most of us pronate to some degree when we walk. It is part of the normal walking cycle and helps shock absorption. However, excessive pronation can affect the normal walking pattern causing stress on soft tissue structures and inefficient lower limb function. This can lead to heel pain, shin pain and ankle problems and leave the feet feeling tired and sore.<\/p>\n
A normal walking pattern, in very simple terms, does the following movement. The outside of the heel strikes the ground first, then the foot rolls (pronates) through to the big toe for lift off. When there is excessive or abnormal pronation, a long list of potential problems is possible in\u00a0 feet and lower limbs.<\/p>\n

The cause of the pronation or flat foot problem determines which treatment options work best.<\/span><\/p>\n Approximately 10% of the population has some degree of hypermobility which can result in abnormal pronation.
