Healthy, happy feet allow a child to engage in a fun and active life. The early years of development set the foundation for adult feet, so it is smart to start foot care early. Our experience with children’s foot problems includes foot and leg aches, pain following sport, walking development, warts, and toenail problems.

It’s never too young to see a podiatrist. If you have any concerns about your children’s feet, we are happy to provide an opinion and advice. We often see children whose parents are concerned about their child’s feet who walk away from the appointment reassured that the condition is normal as a child grows and develops.

Children present with a wide range of foot complaints. We have the space in our clinic to watch and observe their walking and running. Kids love heading out for a little run on the footpath while parents and podiatrist watch. We will take a short video of the child’s gait to assess and analyse their movement and biomechanics. It is useful for explaining what is happening as they walk and run, but also provides a visual history as they get older. Your podiatrist will assess range of movement, muscle strength, standing posture, muscle and tendon tightness, flexibility, and limb length difference. Your podiatrist will also assess current footwear for suitability along with wear patterns on the shoes.

Kids with heel and knee pain are often referred by other treating practitioners and word of mouth from friends and family. We have been treating children’s feet for over 30 years.

Severs Disease is a very common cause of heel pain in young and physically active people. It appears during the growing years of ages 8-14.

Similar conditions such as Osgood-Schlatter’s Disease affect the knee in otherwise fit and healthy growing children and youths.

The Podiatrist might include taping, exercises, activity advice and management shoe advice and, in older children, orthotic therapy. Load management is key in the high activity child athlete and establishing the best load management pathway is done with full consultation and understanding.

Our team takes a conservative approach to children’s foot care and only provide podiatric intervention when it is necessary to do so. Any treatment or footcare plans are developed with the parents and an age-appropriate explanation provided to the child. When treatment is needed it may involve a strength or stretching program, footwear advice, activity modification or orthotic therapy.
