Ingrown toenails are a common, painful problem.
\nAn ingrown toenail occurs when the side of the nail curls and grows into the skin. It will pierce or press the skin on the side of the nail. It can occur on both sides of the nail. It commonly occurs in the big toes but can also appear in other toes. It will appear as painful, red, and swollen. There is often a combination of causes but can include: tight fitting shoes, cutting nails too short, cutting nails down the side rather than straight across, stubbing your toe, picking at the corner of toenails, sweaty feet, or toenail shape.<\/span><\/p>\n When left untreated, they can also become infected.
