CAM Walkers/Moon Boots

CAM Walker is the short name for Controlled Ankle Movement Walker. These boots are a medical device which provide immobilisation, protection, and stabilisation. The goal is to reduce load and stress while the injury heals itself. It is generally prescribed for the stabilisation of bone fractures, severe sprains, or tendon and ligament tears.

The height required of the Moon Boot is determined by the injury site. Melbourne Foot Clinic stocks both ankle and knee height boots. Both height boots have an “Aircast” feature which has adjustable and inflatable interior for additional support and comfort.

If you have been prescribed a moon boot, it is important to be careful to ensure your injury heals properly. This will help you achieve the best outcomes and reduce the risk of long-term complications. Avoid any weight bearing on the injured limb when you are not wearing the boot. Follow the podiatrist instructions as to the recommended time frame to wear the boot, activity periods and rest. As a general rule, your body works and heal best when you stay active in line with your practitioners’ recommendations.

Your gait (walking) will be different in a moon boot and will take a little time to get used to the change. Be careful on stairs and ramps. Hold on to support while you are discovering how to walk in the boot.

A product call Even-Up is available if required when wearing a cam walker or a surgical shoe. This simple device fits over the shoe on the uninjured side to equalise a patients limb length. This can often solve the problem of associated back, hip or knee stress while wearing the boot or shoe.

Your podiatrist will advise you how long you should wear the boot for. Depending upon your injury, it may be somewhere between two weeks and two months. This is often determined by X-ray or ultrasound results. Gentle exercises might be prescribed to maintain range of movement when this is clinically appropriate.

The podiatrist will also make suggestions about managing the condition once you are out of the boot. This might include footwear recommendations, orthotics, or a strengthening program. You should also follow their advice regarding return to your normal activities.

Our size range covers children through an XXL adult.

Due to hygiene reasons, we do not offer a hire service.

It is wise to have the boot fitted by a podiatrist who can:
